Healing properties
Dictamus is a special plant tonic and stimulant of the digestive system, as well as spasmolytic, astringent,
healing, soothing of stomach and intestinal pains. Also, it is diuretic, emmenagogue, cholagogic,
fights amoeba, soothes headache, as well as toothache.
The Cretans use it as a preventive and therapeutic measure for colds and flu, as it seems to strengthen the immune system.
Use:
- In. a vessel which can be closed add 1 tbsp of berbs for 200ml water
- 2. Pour hot water (temperature up to 90oC)
- Steep for 3-5 minutes
History
Origanum dictamnus, the dittany of Crete, Cretan dittany or hop marjoram, is a tender perennial plant that grows 20–30 cm high.
It is a therapeutic and aromatic plant that grows wild only on the mountainsides and gorges of the Greek island of Crete.
It is widely used for food flavouring and medicinal purposes, in addition to featuring as an ornamental plant in gardens.
In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates prescribed plant cures to aid all manner of ailments, and considered dittany of Crete useful for stomach aches and complaints of the digestive system and as a poultice for healing wounds, as well as inducing menstruation.
