What are the beneficial properties of labdanum?
Labdanum is also used in modern herbal medicine, as it has anti-inflammatory and anti-diarrheal effects, is spasmolytic, expectorant and anti-catarrhal.
In addition, it has sedative properties and is used for insomnia, diarrhea and toothache. In newer medical studies on labdanum,
its anti-tumor activity against tumors has been investigated. Since ancient times, labdanum has been used against cholera epidemics, as an aromatic substance for incenses, but also in the embalming of the dead, while its astringent, warming and emollient properties have been highlighted.
Ladania, also known as kistos or hook, is a native, low, bristly shrub of the Mediterranean flora that grows in many parts of Greece and Cyprus. Ladania has fluffy leaves and bears very fine flowers in pink or white color that show a characteristic “wrinkle”.
During the summer months, the leaves and stems of the lavender secrete a resinous substance known as aladanos, labdanum or ladanum. Labdanum is also known as “Myrrh of the Bible” as it was used as incense during the reading of the psalms of David and the Bible. – Source: www.mistikakipou.gr
